Apprentice to Developer: Mamata in KC

Making It In America

   Mamata, LaunchCoder & Software Developer

Tell us a little bit about how you got here.

I love to play with code. I do Java, Groovy, Android coding and also love different mathematical algorithm implementation. I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering from India. I worked as a Software Developer in India for 6 years. Then in 2014, I moved to the US with my husband. I am a dependent visa holder so didn’t have a work permit until 2015 September, then after getting a work visa, I found it difficult to get a tech job with a career gap of 1.5 years.

When I found a LaunchCode advertisement, I immediately started the interview process.  One and a half months later, I got an apprenticeship with a financial consultation company, which makes software to support and improve HUD multi-family loan processing and document and business processes. After three months there, I got a full-time offer in Kansas City as a Software Developer. I was named the employee of the month in February 2017. I was responsible for three modules: work flow development, maintenance, and testing. Also, I was engaged with developing a brand new android app for our product (solo developer).

What is your job environment like — coworkers, paired programming, etc?

My team members are great. All of them are very helpful. We often discuss ideas on how to make our product better, and we executed some of them successfully. I'm looking forward to executing other enhancements.

Overall, how was your experience with the LaunchCode placement process?

It’s wonderful, I didn’t expect that within 1.5 months I would get a job offer. Launch Code is doing a great work.

How did the process differ from your expectations?

I think LaunchCode is following a proven process. As an experienced developer, I think the assessment part really makes sense to choose good developers.

What would be your advice to someone interested in signing up for LaunchCode’s apprenticeship or job placement program?

I would recommend LaunchCode. It’s a great way to find your career path and make your dreams come true!
