Full-Time Web Dev (Access+)

Thanks to funding from Pluralsight One, LaunchCode’s new Access+ course will focus on opening doors to high-demand digital careers for Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino aspiring technologists. Through free education, job placement services, a weekly stipend and wrap-around resources, our Access+ course will ensure participants have the tools needed to successfully enter, and thrive in the tech industry.

Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino tech workers remain vastly underrepresented in the tech industry and are often shut out of these spaces due to the barriers of traditional entry pathways like 4- or 2-year degrees. Through the Access+ program, LaunchCode is demolishing those barriers and giving Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino learners an extra boost on their journey into tech and at the same time, cultivating a diverse pool of skilled talent for local companies

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Q: Who would be a good fit for this program?

A: We assess applicants based on passion, drive and aptitude and most importantly, we’re seeking individuals who are ready to enter a career in technology upon completion of class. There is truly no “average LaunchCoder” – we train people of all ages, from all walks of life and from across the region. We’ve placed people from age 17 to age 70 into jobs! Many of our LaunchCoders have education and/or work experience in non-tech fields and many have no college or traditional higher education experience – both can be successful. We find that our company partners appreciate candidates who bring transferable skills and a unique perspective to the table! The thing they all have in common is that they’re seeking to enter a stable, high-paying, upwardly-mobile career in technology.

Please note - Access+ is a full-time commitment and we are seeking individuals who can dedicate 40 hours a week (plus time for study and out-of-classroom work) to the course. Many of our students have family responsibilities and even part-time jobs outside of the classroom and many of them are successful, however applicants should keep the time commitment in mind when applying.

Q: What does the course teach?

A: Our curriculum is designed to teach the most in-demand skills asked for by our employer partners. This course will teach the fundamentals and tools for full-stack web development. The first unit covers JavaScript, including testing and Angular (a popular JavaScript framework and the second unit teaches the skills to build full-stack web applications using Java (with Spring Boot) or C# (with .NET MVC). Learners will also complete job-readiness modules to strengthen their resume and interview skills and will hear from leaders in the industry during guest speaker opportunities.

Q: Do the learners get jobs at the end?

A: This course is an on-ramp to LaunchCode’s paid Apprenticeship Program, but we do not guarantee job placement at the end of the course. We work our hardest to match our job-ready graduates with companies in need of talent and our goal is always for a full-time conversion at the end of an apprenticeship. However, not everyone enters our Apprenticeship Program and graduates often find jobs and opportunities on their own, which is also great!

Q: What is the application process?

A: Our application process has multiple rounds, all intended to ensure learners are a good fit for the program. However, learners do not need any previous experience with coding or technology to apply! The initial application takes 1-2 hours, and consists of two parts: a questionnaire covering basic demographics and an essay portion that evaluates the applicant’s desire and drive to enter the tech industry and a problem solving assessment that tests for aptitude to learn. Applicants who are selected will move on to a one-hour interview with a LaunchCode staff member, consisting of a conversation to gauge your commitment to the program and to learn more about you. As a Referral Partner, we would love for you to help your referral applicants through this process as much as you’re able!

Q: Do applicants need a laptop?

A: Students will need access to a laptop to participate in the course. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide all students with laptops at this time, however we can definitely work with you and your organization to come up with a solution! Please note, chromebooks and tablets are not sufficient for use in this course.

Q: Why does this course focus on specific demographics?

A: Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino tech workers remain vastly underrepresented in the tech industry and are often shut out of these spaces due to the barriers of traditional entry pathways like 4- or 2-year degrees. Through our Access+ program, LaunchCode is demolishing those barriers and giving Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino learners an extra boost on their journey into tech and at the same time, cultivating a diverse pool of skilled talent for local companies.

Q: What kind of jobs do LaunchCode graduates land?

A: Graduates of this course will typically enter careers as developers working with data management, reporting, business workflows, Android development, and web application and mobile app development. We utilize a paid apprenticeship program and most LaunchCoders are placed into apprenticeships with the goal of converting the apprentice into a full-time employee at the conclusion. About 80% of our apprentices convert into full-time roles!

Q: Who are LaunchCode’s hiring partners?

A: LaunchCode works with hundreds of employer partners of all sizes and across industries. We work with local startups to Fortune 500 companies like Boeing, Mastercard and Microsoft and have become a trusted source of tech talent in the region! LaunchCode has a company relations team who manages relationships with hiring managers and is dedicated to matching employers with LaunchCoders for opportunities and ensuring its a good fit.

Q: When and how do learners receive stipend payments?

A: LaunchCode is working to identify a third party to distribute the stipend payments to learners on a weekly basis. Stipends will only be given to students who stay enrolled in the course and who meet all deadlines and course requirements.

Q: What extra support is available to learners during the course?

A: LaunchCode has “success coaches” on staff to work with learners and ensure they are able to access any additional services or support they need outside of the classroom. We can also work with you, as the referring nonprofit or organization, to check-in on students progress and partner to ensure they are set up for success!
